Twisters
★★★ 1/2
Don't you just love a film that completely ignores someone's trauma? Kidding aside, Twisters is an entertaining ride that nods to its predecessor while confidently standing on its own. Though the plot is thin and the reality questionable, the film's campy charm, especially in the wild final act, keeps it engaging.
The true stars are Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glenn Powell, whose chemistry accelerates the plot. Powell's screen presence and vulnerability make him a standout, while Edgar-Jones commands with her mysterious persona. Despite the heavy use of special effects, it's the performances that shine. Supporting characters from the various storm teams add some memorable moments, though some get lost in the mix. A surprising character twist adds a refreshing layer to the story.
Fans of destruction will enjoy the chaos, though the film does its best to focus on its impact on the characters. The plot mirrors the first film, but Twisters delivers solid entertainment.
Additional thoughts:
• I'm not a truck person, but throughout this film, I found myself saying, "I need Glenn Powell's truck."
• The KFOR cameos add a fun local touch, though it was amusing and slightly maddening to see the same network with different meteorologists when switching channels. That sure was an odd decision to make.
• I know this whole film takes place in Oklahoma, but I really disliked the country music played throughout. It was overwhelming and the song choices weren't great.
