Twister

Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton in Twister (1996)

★★★★

In anticipation of the new film Twisters, Whitney and I revisited the 1996 classic Twister. Despite the years, this film felt strikingly familiar, a testament to its rewatchability. Seeing it in theaters was a memorable experience, and this rewatch didn’t disappoint. While some effects are dated, they don't detract from the film's charm.

Set in Oklahoma, a place deeply familiar to both Whitney and me, Twister resonates with its authentic portrayal of tornado culture. The plot is straightforward: storm chasers, led by Bill (Bill Paxton) and Jo (Helen Hunt), race against tornadoes. The simplicity works, driving home the thrill of the chase.

The cast, including Cary Elwes as the money-driven antagonist Jonas, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose small role is unforgettable, brings depth to the film. The characters' camaraderie and memorable one-liners like "There she is!" make them endearing despite the sometimes simplistic dialogue.

Twister is a masterclass in entertainment without overthinking. It lets special effects take center stage, supported by a well-cast ensemble. This rewatch has me excited for the sequel, hoping it captures the same magic. And yes, while the flying cow is iconic, it's Hoffman's exuberant performance that I'll remember most.
