Get Smart

Anne Hathaway and Steve Carell in Get Smart (2008)

★★★

As a kid, I somehow always would catch myself watching old Get Smart television episodes on Nick at Nite. Maybe it's because my dad loved it when he was a kid, but I also loved the slapstick and absurdist humor of Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. I probably hadn't seen this film since its release in 2008, but remembered it being funny enough that I thought my teenager would enjoy it with me. Turns out that she isn't a fan of the action comedy trope, but I feel like this movie surprisingly held up. The action scenes are way better than they needed to be and the jokes are right down my lane. Steve Carell is the perfect casting choice for Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway knows how to smolder and be hilarious at the same time. Get Smart is the perfect movie to watch when you don't want to think too hard and if anything, it's fun to ponder about a time when Steve Carrell would get billing above Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
