Catherine Called Birdy
★★★★
I've always been a fan of the boldness and wit of Lena Dunham. I appreciate how she has always put herself out there as an actress, but with Catherine Called Birdy, I believe her true gift is through her words and direction. I'm not one who is drawn to films set during medieval times, but Dunham does a fantastic job of modernizing the atmosphere. She takes the plot that we have seen in other films of this elk but twists it in a comical way to stress the importance of women's rights and independence.
Bella Ramsey is perfect in the role of Birdy. She gets to show off the grit and determination that her characters have become well-known for and you can get the sense that she's an actress that we will hear about more in the future. It was also fun to see Andrew Scott as her controlling, but flappable father, and you can tell that Dunham has a lot of fun using him to bring the character to life. Catherine Called Birdy is a delightful surprise and I hope that its innovativeness and charm don't get lost in the sea of streaming content on Prime Video.
