Where the Crawdads Sing

Daisy Edgar-Jones in Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)

★★

Where the Crawdads Sing is not the story for me. For whatever reason, I cannot immerse myself in this world of swamps and tragedy. I had a hard time getting through the book so I thought this film would shed more light on the thing that I was missing. This isn't a horrible film by any means. It looks really good and I don't think anybody is particularly bad, but I think the story is completely boring and predictable.

I feel most bad for Daisy Edgar-Jones who plays Kya. They give her character absolutely nothing to do. I know that men can be drawn to beauty, but her character's beauty is no match for Kya's dullness. We've seen the love triangle plot before and I know that the murder trial is supposed to be a new take on this plot convenience, but with every gasp that occurs in this courtroom, the more and more I felt myself separating from the story. I'm not sure what was to gain by adapting Where the Crawdads Sing because nothing new was brought to the table unless you were excited about the new Taylor Swift song that accompanies this film.
