The Wedding Planner

Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey in The Wedding Planner (2001)

★★

If someone doesn't enjoy the genre of rom-com, I wouldn't be surprised if they pointed to The Wedding Planner as their reason why. It is clichéd and relies on all the tropes to carry it through, yet it has no heart. I don't think any of the good cast deserves the blame (Jennifer Lopez, Matthew McConaughey, Judy Greer). They make the most of a script that provides them with jokes and scenarios that completely fall flat.

A lot of the motivations of the characters have not aged well and the only reason that we are given to believe that these characters would fall in love with each other is because they are both beautiful and bond over the ridiculous premise that brown M&Ms are healthier than the other colors. It doesn't help that for every look or gesture there is a music cue that emphasizes the ridiculousness of the plot. Thankfully there are enough rom-coms in this world to make me forget about this one, because despite looking like it has promise, it fails to connect on any level.
