Some Kind of Wonderful

Mary Stuart Masterson and Eric Stoltz in Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)

★★★

Some Kind of Wonderful would be a whole lot better if Eric Stoltz was interesting in the slightest. He is so earnest and serious in this film that you end up rooting for the stereotypical meatheads to win. Lea Thompson plays the popular girl perfectly, but Mary Stuart Masterson steals the show as Watts. Honestly, we don't see enough of her because as nostalgic as this movie is in how it depicts high school life, the whole tale is bland. She brings a lot of energy to a pretty unimaginative plot, but still this is a film to throw up on on a lazy evening to enjoy some John Hughes-written teen angst.
