Groundhog Day

Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Peggy Roeder in Groundhog Day (1993)

How is it possible that a movie gets better and better each time I watch it when it is so purposely repeatable in its premise? Not only does this Harold Ramis film constantly provide laughs (is there a comedic scene that isn't funny?), it's thought-provoking and ultimately the celebration of kindness. I appreciate how the film doesn't completely cast aside the enjoyment of cynicism, but like all things, warns us how dangerous it can be if we let it rule our world.

I specifically revisited this film (although I feel like I can act out this entire film by memory) for the 50 Best Rom Coms list. It was a different watch than other times because this isn't necessarily a movie that I lump into the rom-com genre. It's interesting that as a whole, despite Phil's (Bill Murray) consistent pursuit to woo Rita (Andie MacDowell), the bigger themes of life and purpose are etched into our brains. Although I completely believe that by the end Phil is in love with Rita, her drastic jump in her feelings is a little peculiar, despite the wonderful last evening that the two spent together. Their chemistry oddly works, though it's hard to imagine Phil (or Bill Murray for that matter) ever really wanting to settle down with someone. This is probably the best acting Murray has ever done. It's a terrific balance of drama and humor. How he can bounce back and forth between the two, yet maintain the core of his character, is astounding.

I absolutely love the beats and rhythm of this script and Ramis perfectly envelops us in the world of Punxsutawney by creating memorable visual sets, music cues ("I Got You Babe") and unforgettable supporting characters. How can you ever forget Ned Ryerson (the always terrific Stephen Tobolowsky)? Simply put, Groundhog Day is the perfect comedy. It's hilarious, touching and impactful. It never fails to challenge me personally and that is quite a feat when a prominent scene features a groundhog driving a truck off a cliff. It's clichéd to say but I have to do it. Groundhog Day is a film that I will never get tired of watching over and over and over again.
