Gifted
★★★
When I first approached Gifted, it was more out of curiosity than excitement. Our oldest, Hallie, is a big fan of McKenna Grace and had been eager to watch it. I'm glad she nudged me into it because this film turned out to be a delightful surprise.
At its heart, Gifted is a drama that deals with weighty issues while still finding moments of warmth and humanity. Chris Evans steps out of his usual superhero persona to play Frank, the caring but slightly scruffy uncle to Mary, a young mathematical prodigy played brilliantly by Grace. The story centers on a custody battle between Frank and Mary’s grandmother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), as they both wrestle with what’s best for this extraordinary little girl.
The film does a good job of drawing viewers into the lives of these characters. It’s not just a courtroom drama; it’s about the complex relationships and decisions that ripple through the lives of everyone involved. Octavia Spencer delivers a solid performance as the caring neighbor who’s always in Mary’s corner, although I felt her role could have been more fleshed out. Jenny Slate also makes an appearance as Mary’s teacher, adding a subplot that feels a bit out of place but still manages to work within the larger story.
What stands out most in Gifted is how it captures the emotional stakes. As a parent, it hits home — the impossible choices, the heartbreak and the desire to do what’s right for a child you love deeply. Chris Evans brings a grounded, everyman charm to Frank, showing vulnerability and strength in equal measure. And Mckenna Grace? She’s an absolute powerhouse. Watching her navigate Mary’s precociousness and childhood innocence is a highlight of the film.
That said, Gifted doesn’t stray too far from the tropes of the “Oscar bait” genre. It’s predictable at times and could have taken more risks, but the film’s sincerity and heart make up for those shortcomings. It avoids veering into melodrama, instead focusing on the connections between characters and the decisions they face.
Overall, Gifted is a solid drama with strong performances and a story that tugs at your heartstrings. While it might not reinvent the wheel, it’s a film that stays with you — a hidden gem for anyone willing to track it down. If only it were easier to stream! The lack of accessibility might keep it from reaching a wider audience, but if you can find it, Gifted is well worth your time.
