George Carlin’s American Dream

George Carlin in George Carlin's American Dream (2022)

★ ★★★

What an important and brave voice George Carlin was. Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio have put together a masterful tribute to Carlin's hilarious and philosophical voice. They aren't afraid to point out his faults just as much as they are willing to sing his praises. The scope and evolution of Carlin's career are particularly impressive. Even though he had his ups and downs, his shift to counterculture shows how important authenticity is to the work that we do. You can be really good at something you don't believe, but you have documentaries like this made about you when you allow your true voice to be heard. Carlin was a man who was unafraid to try things and the world was better for it. If you are a comedy fan, you will bask in the artistry and commitment of this documentary. If you don't know much about Carlin, I will guarantee that you will see why standup comedy can be so transformative. And if you aren't inspired to consume some of his material, I don't hesitate to say that you don't know what funny is or can be.
