Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers

Andy Samberg and John Mulaney in Chip 'n Dale-Rescue Rangers (2022)

★★ ½

Although I grew up on the Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers cartoon, I can't say that I had an affinity for the characters, despite owning and playing the video game version multiple times on Super NES. If you start this film without having seen any trailers or promotions, I guarantee you that you will not expect what's coming. That can both be a good and bad thing.

I appreciate the wacky, and I do mean wacky, course that it takes. It's essentially a rip-off of Who Framed Roger Rabbit mixed in with snarky commentary on IP and animation. Which is actually pretty entertaining if you are above the age of 30. But if you are my kid's age, it completely goes over their head. They seemed to like it at first, but by the last half of it, they were coloring or wrestling each other.

We are in that strange land of streaming movies, especially on Disney. They are producing kid material that makes the adults interested because it taps into their generation's nostalgia, but then the material ends up not making sense to said kids. It's not as entertaining as it could be because the jokes either just appeal to the kids or just make sense to the adults. And in the end, you get a so-so movie because of its imbalance.

Chip 'n Dale has its moments for sure. It really made me laugh at times and I'm pretty much of a fan of anything Andy Samberg and John Mulaney. It goes for it, but it's all the in-between parts that are mediocre. All it does is remind you of Roger Rabbit and that film does it so much better. Would I have preferred an all-animation film starring Chip 'n Dale? No. But despite the efforts and talent evolved, too much focus was made on the tongue-in-cheek humor. After it was over, I was pretty convinced that weed played a big part in the writer's room.
