I am not someone who falls asleep during movies, but I really struggled to say awake during Free Guy. It took me multiple viewings to get through this movie. It's a great concept, but director Shawn Levy takes the opposite approach of less is more. I know that the majority of this movie takes place in a violent, virtual world, but there is so much going on, that you never have time to appreciate or absorb what's actually taking place. I'm not a gamer, so I don't know if maybe I missed some inside jokes, but I don't think gamers will be quick to claim this movie as one of their own. It insults the intelligence level of both gamers and non-gamers alike. I'm a Ryan Reynolds fan, but his charm can only go so far. And the use of IP in this film to elicit excitement is cheap and insulting. It's a shame because I like all of the actors involved, but if I want to experience a video game I'll just stick to playing an actual video game.
