Fire Island
★ ★★★
My draw to watching Fire Island was entirely Bowen Yang. Since the first time that I saw him on SNL, a thought he was a genius. He's just not hilarious, but daring. His presence is what will bring a lot of people to view this new take on the romantic comedy, but if you are like me, you will not only be impressed by Yang but the rest of this stellar cast. Joel Kim Booster (both lead actor and writer) is a revelation. Both his character and script exude confidence and though I'm completely unfamiliar with the world of Fire Island, he makes the story relatable, yet uncompromising. The beats of the story aren't anything new or unexpected, but you have a blast hanging out with this crew as they navigate the ups and downs of hookups and long-term relationships. Like with Happiest Season, Hulu has supported the LBGT community by presenting a film trope with new voices that need to be heard. And if somebody is willing to take a chance on a film like Fire Island, they won't only have an entertaining experience, it'll draw them in that much closer to realizing that we are more alike than different.
