Fever Pitch
★★★
I completely understand why this movie is reviled by most Boston Red Sox fans. I would probably be offended as well if Jimmy Fallon tried to pass himself off as an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. But it doesn't take away from the fact that this movie points out some pretty funny aspects of sports fandom. It's a little crazy that a film hasn't explored this territory a little bit more and maybe this movie ruined the concept for all other films, but I still think this an adorable film to watch. Fallon and Drew Barrymore have really good chemistry and as a sports fan, there are some things that really hit close to home. When I found out we were having our first child, I couldn't wait to give them the cute jersey onesie. I've been out on the amazing date but somehow couldn't be present because of a big game going on in the background.
I watched this with my teenage daughter and she really enjoyed it as well, despite me filling her in more about the history of the Red Sox and how this movie happened to film during one of the most unforgettable seasons ever. Yes, because the film can't fully commit to being a true sports film or a true romantic comedy, it falters some. But I couldn't help but relate to having to shed a little piece of you because you want somebody to fill you up that much more. It's an ode to sports and love, two of my favorite things, so I can forgive it of its crowd pleaser adjustments.
