Dan in Real Life

Juliette Binoche, Norbert Leo Butz, Steve Carell, and Britt Robertson in Dan in Real Life (2007)

★★★★

This movie has always been a sentimental favorite. We were looking for a good film to watch with my family on Thanksgiving and we found this on somebody's Thanksgiving list. Although, it's not holiday-themed, it's a great, sweet film that should appeal to everyone. The performances are very down-to-earth, and although the plot becomes predictable, it plays out in a naturalistic way. Steve Carrell is a great comedic and dramatic actor that reminds me a lot of Steve Martin. He envelopes this sad sack, but you see what a joyous spirit his character has when he lets loose the grips of grief. This film has probably already been forgotten, but it's a simple story that could really span generations, except for the fact that I may have to explain to people who Dane Cook is and why he was so big at the time.
