Young Woman and the Sea

Daisy Ridley in Young Woman and the Sea (2024)

★★★ 1/2

Young Woman and the Sea is an unexpected gem that deserved more than a quiet release on Disney+. Honestly, I can't believe it wasn't given the full Thanksgiving theater treatment. I had no idea this story about the first woman to swim across the English Channel even existed, but the film hooked me with its charm, great performances and inspiring narrative.

Yes, it's your typical "based on a true story" sports drama with some clichés, but Disney knows how to deliver heartfelt, compelling characters. Daisy Ridley shines outside of her Star Wars role, and even our six-year-old was captivated by the story’s depth. The film brings to light how often female accomplishments are overshadowed by male-dominated history, and it does so in a way that’s both entertaining and inspiring.

Sure, some events might be dramatized, but the core achievement remains powerful. If you're looking for a motivational boost or just a well-made, feel-good movie, definitely give this one a shot. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
