You People

David Duchovny, Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, and Lauren London in You People (2023)

★★ ½

I didn't mind You People as a concept. There are some funny moments and one-liners, but the problem is that if you want to be a rom-com, there has to be romantic chemistry between the leads. Jonah Hill and Lauren London bring a lot of personality to their individual roles, but I had no idea why these two would be together. Their relationship solely exists as an excuse for the characters to dive into social conservations and debate about race and culture. I have no problem with these conversations or how they were constructed, but the film wants to be both a rom-com and a political talk piece. It ignores all the important aspects of a rom-com, so the film is extremely unbalanced. The bright spots are Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus who serve as in-laws with overwhelming faults. They are comedic powerhouses who keep this film's motor running and are ultimately what make it worth checking out.
