When Harry Met Sally…

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

★★★★★

What else can be said about When Harry Met Sally...? In the world of rom-coms, it’s simply legendary. Since its release, it's been celebrated for its clever writing, iconic performances and, of course, its heartwarming (and hilarious) exploration of relationships. But the real question is: Does it still hold up as the number one romantic comedy?

Spoiler alert: It absolutely does. I’ve watched countless rom-coms, but When Harry Met Sally effortlessly draws you into its world every single time. Nora Ephron’s sharp, witty script is pure gold, and Rob Reiner directs with such finesse, making every exchange between Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) feel as natural as breathing. From start to finish, it’s a masterclass in pacing. The chemistry between two total opposites – Harry’s cynicism meets Sally’s idealism – is both funny and endearing. And yes, it’s an opposites-attract story, but it doesn’t feel forced or clichéd. This is the film that so many others tried to imitate, whether through the “best friend” side characters (brilliantly portrayed by Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher) or the heart-stopping final scenes. But, as they say, you can’t duplicate heart.

The charm of When Harry Met Sally lies in its simplicity. It’s not trying to be flashy or overly dramatic, which makes it feel so much more authentic. It gives us a philosophical, comical take on love and friendship, all while exploring the age-old question: Can men and women really just be friends? That very question became a cornerstone for rom-coms that followed. And Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan? They don’t just deliver laughs – we actually get to see their characters grow and change in a way that feels genuine.

Watching When Harry Met Sally is like cozying up in your favorite blanket. It’s that comforting, and it’s the kind of movie you can jump into at any scene and feel right at home. Of course, the diner scene has earned its place in pop culture history, but it’s just one of many quotable moments that still hold up decades later.

This film might be from 1989, but its themes, its humor and its emotions are timeless. Sure, some of the fashion and tech have aged, but the heart of the film – the conversations and the questions it raises about relationships – is as relevant as ever. And let’s not forget the soundtrack. Those old romantic classics paired with Harry Connick Jr.’s piano weave a perfect, timeless backdrop for the story.

So, does When Harry Met Sally deserve the top spot on my list? Without a doubt. It’s not only a classic in its own right, but it’s the blueprint for so many beloved movies that came after. And you know what? I have a feeling it will still be one of the top rom-coms 100 years from now.
