We Bought a Zoo

Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson in We Bought a Zoo (2011)

★★★★

We Bought a Zoo is a movie that never fails to bring on the tears, no matter how many times I’ve watched it. I know it’s been criticized over the years for being a bit emotionally manipulative, but for me, it always hits just right. This was the first movie we saw in the theater after having our first child, and maybe that’s where the emotional connection began. The anticipation of becoming parents made every heartstring moment feel personal and profound. Even now, years later, those feelings still linger when I watch it.

Matt Damon shines as a father trying to navigate the wild unknown of both running a zoo and raising kids. He’s not perfect, and that’s what makes his character so relatable. His portrayal of this adventurous, yet very human, dad hits home every time. I’ll admit, We Bought a Zoo isn’t Cameron Crowe’s finest work, but Crowe knows how to capture moments that bring people together, and that’s what this film does best. The soundtrack alone is a masterclass in stirring up emotions, and Crowe’s ability to balance humor and drama—even if it’s not at his usual level—is still noteworthy.

One of the standout moments for me has always been when Damon’s character is looking through old photos on the computer. It’s such a simple scene, but it beautifully illustrates how the images we hold onto link us to our memories, our lives and what matters most. And the final scene? I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say it’s the kind of ending that leaves me misty-eyed every time.

Call me sentimental, call me a softie, but We Bought a Zoo will always hold a special place in my heart.
