The Worst Person in the World

Anders Danielsen Lie and Renate Reinsve in The Worst Person in the World (2021)

★ ★★★

It takes a moment to fully appreciate the character of Julie (the fantastic) Renate Reinsve) in The Worst Person in the World. She's a character that very much exists in this world that we often don't get to see on screen. A female who is fierce, but noncommittal. One who is looking for romance, but holds onto her independence. You see the men in her life struggling to keep up with her as she wrestles with their dependency on her. You'll go up and down on how you feel about Julie, but it's not unlike how we have to interact with different personalities every day. She's by far not the actual worst person in the world, but at times we can each feel that way when we strive for individualism.

I always appreciate foreign language films for forcing me to pay more attention to the story by reading the subtitles. This is an intimate film already because of its subject matter, but when you are able to step away from the dialogue and take in the cinematography and blocking of this story, it makes you confront things that aren't the most comfortable. I'm sure a lot of people will be drawn to a particular scene where the world stops for Julie and it's a beautiful scene. Not only for what it is trying to convey in the moment, but also for how fleeting those moments can be.
