The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
★ ★★ ½
How can you not love Nick Cage? I've always appreciated his talent and I've felt like his stronger performances completely outweigh the bad. Only Nicolas Cage could be the actor to play himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. He is able to poke fun at himself while still showcasing his range and his ability to carry a film.
If you've seen the trailer, what you see is what you get. A fun, tongue-in-cheek action caper without too much depth to it. The chemistry between Cage and Pedro Pascal is a lot of fun, and all involved know the complete tone to take with the material. There aren't many surprises as the film starts the unfold, but that doesn't take away from the overall enjoyment.
This is an experiment that could have gone really awry. The filmmakers decided to take a more traditional path with the story instead of something like Being Like Malkovich, which is usually something I lean towards a little more. But I don't blame them for not getting too artsy or heady with it. If they wanted to make Nick Cage relevant to audiences again, then they did their job well.
