The Super Mario Bros. Movie

★★ ½

Growing up as a kid, you always had that one friend who wanted you to play video games with them. You undoubtedly would end up on a couch watching them dominate a game for hours without you having to pick up a controller once. That's how The Super Mario Bros. Movie felt for me. It's visually stunning, but not complex. It gives little life to the characters that we have grown up seeing. For the most part, they come off as cardboard as their original Nintendo origins, save Jack Black and Seth Rogen's performances. It's all plot and a lot action, which will enamor a lot of children. But for the adults, it's a struggle to connect to the movie beyond the nostalgia and the color. But kudos to the original score that brings cinematic life to The Super Mario Bros. music that has been a ear worm all of our lives.
