The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

★★★★★

Sometimes, a holiday movie sneaks up on you, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever did just that for me. It’s easily one of my favorite Christmas films to come along in years. And trust me, that’s saying a lot from someone who grew up deeply connected to the Christian church but has since steered clear of most faith-based films. Too often, they feel heavy-handed and preachy, missing the mark on quality storytelling. This movie, however, is a breath of fresh air, perfectly capturing the heart and humor of the classic book.

First things first: this is a remarkably faithful adaptation of the beloved story. It brings to life everything I’ve always loved about the book—the messy, heartfelt and often hilarious way it portrays what the church should be for people and the community. It’s been a cherished story in our family, one we’ve read to our kids over the years, and seeing it so thoughtfully brought to the screen was truly moving.

The casting is spot-on. Judy Greer shines as the mom, and Pete Holmes proves himself as a charming and genuinely funny dad. But let’s talk about the kids—they absolutely steal the show. Their performances are perfectly imperfect, brimming with personality and charm. Each one feels like they’ve stepped right out of the pages of the book, with the kind of expressive faces and chaotic energy that make this story so memorable.

Stylistically, the film nails it. Maybe it’s my nostalgia as a child of the ‘80s, but I adored the pacing, tone and set design. The movie takes its time, lingering on moments just long enough to land a laugh or tug at your heartstrings without ever feeling manipulative. Every emotional beat is earned, and the humor feels natural and genuinely funny, not forced.

What really sets The Best Christmas Pageant Ever apart is its spirit. While many holiday films attempt to retell the Christmas story or tap into its meaning, this one stands out by grounding itself in authenticity. It’s a powerful reminder of why we celebrate the season, not in a preachy way, but with a heartfelt focus on selflessness, community and the joy of giving.

As a cherry on top, Lauren Graham’s narration is pitch-perfect, adding warmth and relatability to the small-town charm of the story. It’s like wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket and settling in for a tale you know and love.

I went into this movie expecting a good time, but I left completely surprised by how much I loved it. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a funny, touching and beautifully crafted film that’s perfect for the holidays. It’s a must-watch for anyone looking to reconnect with the genuine spirit of Christmas.
