Sr.

Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Downey Sr. in Sr. (2022)

★★★ ½

Similar to the 2020 Netflix documentary Dick Johnson is Dead, it's hard to be too critical of a film that is a love letter from a child to their father. Sr. is clearly a labor of love and the movie itself becomes a way to honor, remember and pay homage to a parent. As much as I know about movies, I honestly didn't know much about Robert Downey Sr. and if anything, I loved that this movie serves as a film history class. I'm a sucker for documentaries that weave movie clips into its narrative, and Robert Downey Jr. completely knows how to showcase his father's talents. Even though the style and flow didn't completely connect to me at times, it's fun watching the material knowing that this is the language the Downeys use to speak to one other. This could have easily become a vanity project for Jr., but he paints a honest portrait of a man that needed to be known and remembered. Sr. is the ultimate eulogy and I could only be so lucky to have a film like this to commemorate my life.
