Somebody I Used to Know
★★
I didn't know Alison Brie could be unlikable, but her character in Somebody I Used to Know is someone that you never root for. There is somewhat of a redeemable arc for her, but it's not enough to forget about what she does to unseemingly break up a wonderful partnership between her first love Sean (Jay Ellis) and his fiancé, Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons).
The script is even more shocking when you find out that Brie penned this with her husband and director, Dave Franco. I'm hoping this isn't based on their romantic relationship, because if it is, they have zero respect for any other relationship other than theirs.
This movie has been advertised as a romantic, comedic romp, but it's anything but. Even the last moments set in a nudist colony feel forced and like a publicity stunt. I liked all the actors involved and I've always been a fan of both Brie and Franco, but screenplays might not be their strong suit.
