Ski Patrol

T.K. Carter, George Lopez, and Roger Rose in Ski Patrol (1990)

It's funny when you revisit a movie from your youth. I probably haven't seen Ski Patrol since I was ten. Up to this point, I couldn't have told you what happened in this movie, but as I rewatched this movie, it was incredible how many memories came flooding back. We had a free, lazy night on our vacation in Santa Fe and we just needed to veg out on something with our kids. I saw this pop up on Amazon Prime Video and I was eager to see why I had such fond memories of this film.

Ski Patrol truly has some funny jokes and scenes, but as a whole, it's pretty awful. The problem is that it doesn't know what it wants to be. It wants to evoke Animal House, Airplane! and Caddyshack, but it can never commit fully to a crude joke, a silly setup or pure sports action. It actually has some talented actors (Leslie Jordan, Martin Mull) and the skiing scenes from a practical standpoint are impressive. But for a 90-minute runtime, it's a slog to get through. I can understand how my ten-year-old self got wrapped up in the silliness of it all, but it also made me realize that maybe I wasn't exposed to enough good comedies as a kid.
