Scream

Roger Jackson in Scream (1996)

Scream is a formidable film for me. Yes, I grew up watching select scary films here and there, but Scream opened up my eyes to the genre. I'm still a horror novice compared to most film geeks and Scream is the perfect horror film for me. It certainly has plenty of jump scares and more blood than you remember, but its self-reverent tone was revolutionary for the genre and makes the intensity a little more bearable for those who aren't big movie buffs like the know-it-all Randy (Jamie Kennedy).

The opening scene with Drew Barrymore draws you in perfectly into this slasher film and Wes Craven draws delightful performances from a who's who of young '90s actors. The twists and turns pay off despite leaning towards the ridiculous and everyone involved seems to know how to strike the perfect balance between campiness and screaming. Scream brought back the feeling that a horror film could also be a blockbuster and is completely accessible despite grasping onto some pretty dark intentions.
