Runaway Bride

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride (1999)

★★★

I won't lie, I rewatched this one mainly while looking at my phone. I probably haven't seen Runaway Bride since high school and over fall break, my family shared a hotel room, so this was the perfect innocent film to throw up as I watched out of the corner of my eye.

I mainly couldn't get over how much importance we put on the profession of journalism in 1999. Especially columnists. The charm of Julia Roberts is always undeniable and I found myself singing along to a lot of the songs from the soundtrack, but why did the movie studio feel like this plot needed to take up almost two hours? This is not nearly Garry Marshall's best film, nor is it his worst. But you can't help but feel like he let Richard Gere and Roberts do all the heavy lifting. Which you can't blame him too much for. But with such a thin plot, he should have stepped in more and tightened up the gaps.
