M3GAN

Amie Donald, Allison Williams, and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)

★★★

What I love about movies is that you can enjoy them as much by yourself as you can with a group of people. M3GAN is a rare exception that I wish that I hadn't watched it alone. It's a movie that was clearly built for a communal experience. There is a campiness and tongue-in-cheek humor to the whole thing which makes you long to look at someone and ask, "Did that just happen?"

All that said, I sure hope the creators knew how ridiculous this movie is because it definitely is verging on some unstable territory. "Is this movie winking at me or is this movie just bad?" is a question that came up often in my mind.

M3GAN hits an approachable sweet spot for horror. It has cuts and moments of terror that huge horror fans will delight in, but it's not so intense that it scares people away. It has the right balance of innovativeness, humor and gore that makes it one of the more accessible suspense films I've seen in some time. But don't go in thinking you'll be surprised. For a killer doll movie, it is quite predictable. But is the movie even worth picking apart when it tries to sell you on the notion that Allison Williams is a tech designer with an enthusiasm for collectible toys?
