Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile
★★ ½
As our two daughters grow older, we are slowly exiting the path of family films. We love going to see movies as a family in theaters, but as the price of going on these adventures increases, we have tried to be more discerning in our choices. Generally, we enjoy family movies with live action, which was the appeal of going to see Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. We honestly didn't go in with huge expectations, I mean, it's a movie about a singing crocodile. But, for a film that puts a lot of effort into what it is trying to accomplish, so much of it falls flat.
I still can't wrap my head around why Lyle can only sing and not talk, but thankfully Javier Bardem is in this movie to bring some sort of energy and pizzazz to the whole show. The script seems to invest a lot into his character and not the rest of the key roles. It's not that the actors are bad, but the characters are really not interesting, especially when interacting with an animated crocodile. I will give them one thing, they cram the original song Top of the World down your throats so it will undoubtedly get stuck in your head when you leave the theater.
