Juice WRLD: Into the Abyss

Juice WRLD-Into the Abyss (2021)

★★ ½

As I get older, it gets harder to keep up with what's popular in music, especially with the rise of streaming music. I absolutely had no idea who Juice WRLD was or really what an impact he made. From the get go, you can tell he is an immense talent and a tortured sole. This candid behind-the-scene look of this artist before his shocking(?) death is solemn to say the least. If you are a huge fan, I can understand you enjoying this doc. But if you aren't, the onslaught of drug use and the constant chirping of his entourage about his talent gets repetitive. We slowly get a glimpse of a young man destroying himself and we ourselves feel suffocated by his environment filled with hotel rooms and tour buses. The film needed to be cut down severely and I think Juice WRLD's story would still have been given its due. This doc ultimately becomes a slog, which is unfortunate, because I think it's a story that needed to be told.
