Fiddler on the Roof

Topol in Fiddler on the Roof (1971)

★★★ 1/2

Fiddler on the Roof starts with a toe-tapping, lighthearted charm but gradually deepens into a poignant tale of tradition and change. Our family was drawn in after hearing "Tradition" at our local theatre, and while the catchy tunes and humor initially hooked us, the film's dive into Jewish culture and faith added unexpected depth. Yes, the three-hour runtime can feel like a mountain to climb, but the film's rich portrayal of history, stunning cinematograph, and an unforgettable lead performance make the journey worthwhile. It may not be the musical you revisit often, but it's a must for anyone serious about the genre.
