Forgetting Sarah Marshall
★ ★★★
Everyone has gone through a devastating break-up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall perfectly encapsulates the feelings of jealousy, confusion and acceptance that come with such a monumental event. The laughs are constant throughout, but I forgot how emotional and touching the second half of the film was. Jason Segal does a great job of showcasing what a bumbling, vulnerable mess he can be, but what really shines through is the great acting ensemble. From the big roles, down to the minor ones, everyone has a moment to shine.
This is definitely Peter's (Segal) story, but I really appreciated that the story gives an arc and perspective to all of the other characters as well (Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis and Russell Brand). It's easy to become extremely self-focused during a break-up, but the writing of this movie cleverly spells out how it can affect all those around you. It's hard to find anyone who is fully emotionally content, and this film is a perfect display of how one needs to find fulfillment within themselves before finding it through another person.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is purely a fun film to be around (it never hurts when the setting mainly takes place in Hawaii). It was fun to revisit these memorable characters and familiar scenes. This movie dares to be odd and quirky, and somehow it works, singing Draculas and all.
